Maybe I just didn’t pay enough attention but I never noticed this gorgeous instrument before! The Uilleann Pipes are a type of bag pipe which gets inflated using your elbow as a pedal. Uileann is the Irish word for elbow!
I thought this excerpt from Wikipedia was great:
The tone of the uilleann pipes is unlike that of many other forms of bagpipes. They have a different harmonic structure, sounding sweeter and quieter than many other bagpipes.. The uilleann pipes are often played indoors, and are almost always played sitting down.
