Bittersweet Symphony Drama

I am planning on doing my own version of The Verve’s 1997 “Bittersweet Symphony”. It’s such a cool song and will sound great on the cello!

As I was thinking about it I vaguely remembered that there was some drama with their famous hook, a strings sample. I looked into and it and they lost millions for 22 years over this!

Long story short the iconic strings sample was from an orchestral cover of a Rollins Stones song in 1965. So it wasn’t even in the original Stones song.. (the sample comes in at 1:40)

I had to take a music copyrighting class in college and it was my least favorite class ever! It was so confusing because of all the lawyers and industry people involved.. there was really no music in this class lol

At the end the Rolling Stones decided to give the rights back to The Verve in 2019 and they can now make money off of this gorgeous track. Here is The Verve playing live.
